Types of photography

Apparently there are many types of photography. This is something that I had not really considered before. I usually just photograph what I like or what I want to remember. However, it is always good to look and broaden horizons.

There is fashion/glamour photography that deals with clothes, accessories and modeling. Fashion photography shows clothes in beautiful settings and captures the imagination. Glamour photography is more about getting the picture of the model in different situations, like Ms. April in playboy. Winking smile

Still life photography where you capture subjects grouped together to form a composition. Wedding photography is about capturing the groom and bride in memorable and romantic pictures, but maybe with a little more interesting setting. There is also Nature/Wildlife photography. I would think that capturing the moment on film would require great timing and patients.

Photojournalism you have in a category by itself. It is using pictures to report on current events. Where the picture captures the moment of the event, the story is what explains the events leading up to the moment. The story will be the explanation of the reaction of picture captured.

These are just a few of the types that caught my eye. Maybe you can find some and let me know what they are. Even better tell me what you think of the ones I liked.

Point of View

The point of view through your camera lens can have many effects on your photography. I just wanted to review a few of the view points and lend you some input on how they affect pictures.

The view points are as follows:

  • Juxtaposition is taking a picture from an unexpected view. Up close with a tiger is a more interesting than from a safe distance.
  • Becoming the subject allows the viewer of the photo to experience the moment as if they were there. They actually looking through the eyes of the photo’s subject.
  • Shooting at eyelevel will allow the subject of the photo to connect with the viewer and create an emotional bond.
  • Shooting from above or below can give off the feeling of being in control to feeling as if you are just along for the ride.

After reading a little more about these view points I realized what I wanted to do. First, I went through all of my pictures to see if I could find each of these view points.

Looking up at the sunset in Nevada Dessert. All you could do is admire the majesty.

Head on view point shows the rose in-between opening and being in full bloom.

This one you are looking down on the children playing in the garden. Looking down as if you were the parent.

I think I will be practicing this week this view points just to get a little bit of a wow factor.

Digital photography is generous with its versatility…

You may be wondering what do I mean by that. I will explain. Digital pictures are a canvas that you can use your computer to put a more artistic stamp on your photos. With the right software, you become the master of your photography (well that depends on how well you know the software). Today, I wanted to run through some choices you have for a photo editor.

When I say run through, I mean they get a sentence or two. First up, Gimp2 is a powerful editor that can stand up to Adobe. You not only can edit photos, but create graphics that can be used anywhere. The draw back is it might be more power than an average person would need. Next, Corel Paint Shop Photo Pro X3. This software also has a lot going for it. It is pretty powerful when processing your photos, but goes way beyond when you start getting serious. I have made icons, web graphics and other things that turned out well. It is also a little more user friendly than the Gimp2, but not free like Gimp.

The final contestant here is Picasa 3. I have to say I love it. Its easy, free, and I can get effects that look good. See what I did to a random wedding photo I had.

Before the picture was in color and all you saw was the lady adding decorations to the arch. However after putting the black and white filter on it, you see the light playing on the grass and chairs. Wow, I could not have been more surprised. So try them, try them I say. Winking smile Maybe let me know what you thought.

Simple Rule of Thirds

I wanted to share with you a little bit about a basic photography tip. It is a basic concept that states that you don’t have to put your subject in the middle of the frame. You can put them off center to create a more interesting picture. Its not something you want to do all the time, but it might help with the more difficult subjects.

This was my original picture of a water fall. However I think it would have been better had I thought about the rule of thirds.

Putting the water fall in the right side of the picture just makes it more interesting.

Where I live…

ccskylineThere was a time that I could never appreciate where I come from. However, I could never leave the place I grew up. We are a simple port city on the Gulf of Mexico. Our skyline is not much to look at, but it takes a good picture.

WATERFALL IN JAPANESE GARDENThis is the Sunken Tea Gardens in San Antonio Tx. I went there for a brief visit. I edited the picture with Picasa. I like the way it made what color that was there pop.

This is just a couple of pictures that I am using to introduce myself, as you have yet to know me. Open-mouthed smile

One last picture. I took it on my honeymoon in Nevada.

Everyday photography…

I don’t always take into account technique when there is something I want to capture. Sometimes it is just a moment of inspiration. Well, that is how it usually is no matter when it is. Smile

For my first post I will show you some photos that I took that were cute. My cat Valentina was just looking for us from her window seat.
